History of IPL Prize Money
We are about to witness the fifteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the richest and most glamorous T20 cricket league in the world. As IPL Stats show, the tournament has made careers for those involved, as well as prospered their lives.

Back in 2008, the IPL prize money was $3 million, which was equivalent to 12 crores of Indian rupees. Shane Warne, the former Australian leg spinner who captained and coached the winning Rajasthan Royals team, received $1.2 million alone.
As the tournament has grown in value by more than three times over the last 13 years, the prize money has played a significant role in understanding the tournament’s financial growth. There were INR 20 crores in prize money for the IPL winners alone during IPL 2019. While in IPL 2008, the total prize money allocated to the top four teams was only $3 million.
Due to widespread COVID-19, the prize money did not remain that high for long, and IPL 2020 was pushed from April-May to September-October-November, and the IPL 2022 will be similar to its previous edition.
Besides the postponement, the COVID-19 pandemic also prevented the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from continuing to distribute that amount of money during the IPL 2020 tournament, as it had to be held in the UAE to ensure the safety of the players, officials, and their families. Therefore, 50% of the winnings were reduced.
There will be no similar prize money in the IPL 2022 & 2021 edition to the one in the 2020 edition. Prize money of INR 20 crores will be awarded to the winners, INR 13 crores to the runners-up, and INR 7 crores to the third and fourth-placed teams.
There will be a prize of INR 15 lakh for the winner of the Orange Cap (most runs), and a prize of INR 20 lakh for the winner of the Purple Cap (most wickets).
