Introducing a new rule in the Indian Premier League in 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is drawing inspiration from Australia’s Big Bash League. It will now be possible to substitute players in the IPL, just like in football.
The BCCI is in the process of implementing this concept. A team will consist of 12 players after this rule takes effect. According to the rules, only 10 wickets will be out. All franchises of the IPL have been notified about this rule by the BCCI.
What is Impact Player?
Impact Players will be introduced in the upcoming season of IPL by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. A T20 match in which teams can change one of their playing XI members according to the situation.
This was stated in one of the BCCI’s statements. Several details about the new rule are expected to be forthcoming soon, according to the board. As the popularity of T20 cricket grows, it is essential that we introduce new dimensions to the game, the BCCI wrote in its circular sent to all state associations.
As a result, this format will appeal to more people. There is an indication in the report that the rule of tactical substitution will be exactly as described in the report. Similarly, it was implemented in the domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
How Will Be the Rule?
A captain from each team will have to give the names of 4-4 substitute players before the toss of the match during which the match will be played. Both teams will be able to replace one player each in their starting eleven in these.
On the field, however, there will always be 11 players. Replaced players are required to play the entire match as per the rules. Replaced players won’t be able to return to the field after going to the bench. Players can be changed by both teams until the 14th over gone.
What Does the Rule Say?
Through the Tactical Substitution rule, any player can be replaced. In spite of getting out after batting. Additionally, the player who comes on as a substitute will bowl his batting or four overs of the prescribed quota.
The remaining batting players in the team will be required to leave the batting if a replacement arrives in place of a dismissed batsman. In accordance with this rule, Delhi’s player Hrithik Shokeen was also replaced in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament that year. A T20 tournament in India had never been experimented with before.
Can the Substituted Player Take Further Part in the Game?
It is not permitted for the substituted player to participate in the game in any capacity – not even as a substitute fielder. As outlined in MCC Law 24.1 – substitute fielders, if a player is injured while fielding during an over, the current playing conditions apply. Injured players, however, can no longer participate in matches if they are replaced by Impact Players. It is only possible to introduce Impact Player after the fielding side completes its over.
The MCC Law 24 – Fielder’s absence; substitutes – will apply if an Impact Player is used and injured. The umpires can allow a substitute fielder to field in place of an injured fielder if they believe that the fielder was injured or became ill during the match. In this situation captaincy and bowling are not permitted for the substitute.
Will Teams be Allowed an Impact Player in Shortened Games?
It is, but not if the delay causes less than 10 overs per side to be bowled in the match.
How is this Different from BBL’s X-Factor Rule?
X-Factor allows a team to replace a member of its starting XI after the 10th over of the first innings, provided the replacement player has not already batted or bowled more than one over. Even if the player they’re replacing has bowled, replacement players are allowed to bowl four overs each.
