IPL Sponsors List From 2008 to 2022
Through its partnership with Tata Group, BCCI has boosted revenue and has a partner whose patriotism is unmatched. BCCI has appointed the Tata Group as its chief sponsor of the world’s most lucrative cricket tournament, replacing VIVO, the Chinese mobile manufacturer.
For $2,200 crore, Vivo has secured the title sponsorship rights between 2018 and 2022. A one-year extension is granted to the Chinese mobile company as title sponsor. Due to the worsening Sino-Indian diplomatic ties, Vivo stepped down as IPL sponsor in 2020. In 2021, Vivo was back as IPL sponsor.
The IPL has had various title sponsors over the past 13 years, starting with DLF in 2008 and ending with Vivo in 2021. IPL sponsors list year wise from 2008 to 2022.
DLF (2008 to 2012)
After submitting a bid of about 40 crores, DLF won the title sponsorship and signed a contract with BCCI for four years. Neither company decided to renew the deal when it expired in 2012.
Pepsi (2013 to 2015)
When DLF failed to renew the contract in 2013, Pepsi stepped in to sponsor the IPL. With this sponsorship, it became the second brand to support the IPL. During a five-year period, the multinational beverage company bid $496.2 crore. In light of the spot-fixing allegations swirling around the league, the beverage company decided to walk out of its contract a year ahead of schedule.
Vivo IPL (2016 to 2017)
Earlier this year, a bid of $60 crore was submitted by Vivo, a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer, to BCCI for a two-year contract.
Vivo IPL (2018 to 2019)
Having bid 2,199 crore, the Chinese mobile manufacturer successfully re-won their sponsorship rights for 5 years. Vivo paid approximately 440 crore per year. Due to the Galwan Valley military conflict between India and China, it terminated the agreement before it ended in 2020.
Dream11 (2020)
A bid of 222 crores was made by Dream11, the gaming platform that took over Vivo’s space.
Vivo IPL (2021)
Vivo came back after replacing Dream11 with its own gaming platform. Sponsorship rights for Vivo were awarded for 5 years starting in 2018 and ending in 2022. As Vivo returned in 2021, it hoped that Sino-Indian tensions would be forgotten.
But, the matter seems to have remained a problem for the company. The BCCI has gained a double boost of revenue and patronage by signing on Tata Group, a veritable example of home-grown Indian enterprise.
